Litter Control Project
On May 9, 2009, a small force of the Jr. Azalea Garden Club went out to Bobby Gerald Blvd. to do the pre-Foxtrot Festival cleanup. It was a sunny, breezy day for them so everything went rather quickly. The 2.5 mile trek was completed in about 2 hours. Surprisingly, we only got 1 1/2 bags of trash and debris. Thanks to Caroline Wilson and Lily Scholz for a job well done!
AGC Annual Picnic
On Thursday, May 14, 2009, the Azalea Garden Club proceeded to Fort Retch for their annual Spring picnic and plant exchange. There was alot of delicious food and fellowship followed by the business meeting. We also had a lovely view of the lake. Frank Oliver was the representative for Wildlife Action who opened the area to us and provided a tour of the facilities. Unfortunately, due to a rainy day, we were not able to walk along the interpretive trails but there is always next year. Thanks to our hostesses for the advance preparation and to all who participated. It was a perfect way to adjourn our club for the 2008-09 year.
Foxtrot Festival
The Foxtrot Festival is an annual event everyone looks forward to each year. The Azalea Garden Club is no different. For us, this is usually our second big fundraising event of the year. Different members of the club use their creativity to design potted plants for the big raffle. We also raffled a gardener's bag, scarf and cheesecake. This year's event was a mix of sun, rain, wind and humidity. But we held on til the end. At 4PM, the names were pulled.

National Garden Week
June 7 - 13, 2009 is National Garden Week. The Jr. Azalea Garden Club designed arrangements using hydrangea, iron lily leaves, ivy and jasmine. Mr. Bob Anderson, our City Administrator, was delighted to have their arrangement placed in the lobby of the Marion City Administration Building. To top off the celebration, the girls decided to do a second arrangement for the Marion Police Department. Chief Smith took a moment to have his picture taken with the girls as they placed their design in the lobby of his facility. They also visited the Post Office to admire the Gerber Daisy arrangement designed by the Garden Therapy members of the Azalea Garden Club. National Garden Week has gotten off to a great start thanks to Bob Anderson, Chief Willie Smith, Jennifer Smith, Brooke Zeman, Meagan Webster, Rachael Levy, Lindsey RIchardson, Sandy Levy and Teresa Scholz.

Jr. Azalea Garden Club Members
Some of the Jr. Azalea Garden Club members visited the community garden where they did a bit of weeding. The garden is currently being harvested at various times and the produce given to the Church of God food bank on N. Main Street for distribution. This garden is an initiative by the National Garden Club to beautify blight areas. Juanice Hardee is the coordinator of this project on behalf of our club and the national initiative. It's hot, it's dirty but it's worth it. Thanks go to Juanice Hardee and volunteers for their effort.

President's Fair
Saturday, July 11, 2009 was the President's Fair in Columbia at Ebenezer Lutheran Church on Richland Street. This is a very lovely church with a background steeped in rich historical flavor. I attended as President of the Azalea Garden Club along with Caroline Wilson who is President of the Jr. Azalea Garden Club escorted by her mother, Kim. Caroline and I both became Life members of the GCSC. She was most interested in the programs Teaching Kate and Camp Wildwood while I perused displays and literature of the activities that are being promoted by various clubs as well as the GCSC. The club also received a certificate of appreciation from the National Garden Club for our 2008-09 Yearbook. While in Columbia, we took the opportunity to visit the GCSC Memorial Garden which is absolutely beautiful and very inviting. Thank you to all the ladies and gentlemen who so graciously labored to hold this year's event.

August Weeding
Sandy Levy the Chairperson for our Horticulture Committee and Elizabeth Wallace called on members of the Jr. club to help one Saturday in August weeding local flower beds. Caroline Wilson, President of the junior club, came in answer to their call for help. Keeping things tidy is part of our commitment to our community.
Jr. Azalea Garden Club
Though many are in the midst of summer vacations, the Jr. Azalea Garden Club is hard at work decorating bluebird houses for a fundraising project. These will be sold for $10 each or you can pay the fee and donate the house back to the club. Then, it will be hung in one of the parks in our community to replace houses that are deteriorating. Thank you must be said to Rick Levy who built these lovely homes for our feathered friends as well as Sandy Levy and Rebekah Jones who donated their time to the project.
Christmas Tea
The Azalea Garden Club had their annual Christmas Tea at the home of Carolyn Thomas. Her home is always an impeccably dressed Christmas display crafted to dazzle and amaze. Stacy Gann opened the gathering by welcoming members and guests. There were announcements by Sandy Levy, Horticulture, Nelle Herring, Garden Therapy, Elizabeth Wallace, Litter Control and Ritta Hennecy, Ways and Means. Afterwards, there was a feast to delight the eyes and pallette as well as a wonderful time spent with friends. To top off the occasion, members donated gloves, mittens, scarves and hats to the Department of Social Services for those in need this Christmas. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
