The Junior Azalea Garden Club
Arbor Day Celebration
The Jr. Azalea Garden Club celebrated Arbor Day by planting a Sugar Maple in honor of Elise Tollison at the Tollison Recreation Center on Saturday, December 12, 2009. Caroline Wilson, President, welcomed members and guests to the celebration. A brief history of Arbor Day as well as the importance of trees to our community was read. Each club member did her part to make sure the delicate roots of the 6 foot Sugar Maple were planted warmly in the earth.

Hypertufa Pots Project
Hypertufa Pots Project
A fun project for the club was to make hypertufa pots. It was a first try. If I must say so myself, they did pretty good.
Recipe:
(1) part portland cement
(1) part Vermiculite or builders sand
(2) parts peat moss
combine ingredients into a oatmeal consistency. Using a plastic or metal, mold the mixture the object making sure to place a dowel, pipe or piece of wood for a drain hole. Cover with plastic for 24 hours. Pop out and cure with vinegar and water consistency. Leave in the open for several days. Then, plant your poisies to your hearts content.

September Litter Control
Keeping our community clean is a key focus for the Azalea Garden Club and its Jr. members as well. On September 26, 2009, both clubs joined forces to pick up paper and debris along Bobby Gerald Boulevard. Keep up the good work girls!

Preparing the Winter Stores
In order to help our feathered friends prepare for the coming winter months, the Jr. club made attractive bird feeders for hanging in their yards. It's a little messy but what useful project isn't. Another great job!
